Indie (folk) cinema
On the eve of the election, a reporter and photographer set out for Washington, via America. Friday Night RewindIt doesn't matter which team you cheer for. These themes are probably going to make some of you have flashbacks to wasted mornings or afternoons spent sprawled in front of the TV. Jonathan Richman has carved out a dedicated fan base thanks to his quirky but heartfelt ballads performed both solo and with his band, the Modern Lovers. But chances are you know him from There's Something About Mary, in which he plays the travelling troubadour who chronicles Ben Stiller's attempts to woo Cameron Diaz ("His friends would say be reasonable, his friends would say let go / But there's something about Mary that they don't know"). Richman, who performs at Skipper's Smokehouse Tuesday, isn't the only indie artist whose big break came via Tinseltown. Impatient Mommy Has Homework to Do
Guest blogger Dani Klein Modisett: My boy started kindergarten a few weeks ago. Unlike his developmental preschool (read: all play and hope they end up learning by instinct), his new school is highly academic. He has 45 minutes of homework a night. Mostly it involves tracing numbers, learning to recognize letters that form the word for a color and then coloring a flower or a bird that color. Pretty basic. To watch him struggle through it, you would think he was deciphering Morse code. The first few days were painful. For me. I wanted to grab the pencil out of his small hand.Come on, let's move this along ! How hard can it be to stack a couple of o's on each other and call it an eight for god's sake?! I don't know where I was rushing to. Even after all these years of living, my impatience is always at the ready to undermine the value of an experience. Fortunately, I haven't ripped any writing implements out of my son's hands yet. I have even come to appreciate our work time together.Â...

Rankings or Predictions? Polls or Playoffs? Can We Just Play?
Bleacher Report. BR.currentArticle = BR.Article.load({"blurb": "What's in a name? Is a ranking about who is the best team, or is it a prediction of the outcome of the season? Is it important? Azinger keeps his eye on U.S. AP PhotoPaul Azinger is the captain of the United States Ryder Cup team. He'll have four at-large picks to make Sept. Paul Azinger's appearance in the PGA Championship will mark his first event since the Memorial back in June and you can bet the U.S. captain will be keeping a close eye on the Americans who are bidding to make the team he'll field Sept. The top eight players on the U.S. points after the PGA automatically make the team -- Tiger Woods doesn't count since he's out for the season with a bum knee -- and Azinger will fill the 12-man team Sept. That's a change from the past, when U.S. It was on Azinger's suggestion that the PGA of America not only gave the captain four selections but changed the points process. In the p...
